Building a Community in Group Therapy
Isolation and lack of motivation are side effects of addiction that cause an individual to lose or damage meaningful social ties and relationships. In recovery, clients can begin to repair those relationships through accountability, education, and therapy.
Residents must complete eight hours of clinical work per day. Clinical work includes participation in a 12-Step program in order to support sobriety. Playing an active role in a team working toward the same goal is key to lasting recovery.
In group therapy, one or more therapists will lead meetings with conversations on substance abuse or mental health disorders. The therapist will then determine if the group needs a topic to speak on or open the floor for participants to speak freely.
Process groups provide a unique opportunity for our clients to enhance their level of self-awareness and actively improve their interpersonal skills. By receiving additional perspective and support from peers, our clients benefit from a safe environment to express themselves through new behaviors.
Evidence-Based Psychotherapy
Along with group therapy, residents will also receive one-on-one therapy to tackle the more personal aspects of addiction. Evidence continues to prove that psychotherapy, or talk therapy, is effective in treating addiction and co-occurring disorders. A core component of our program confronts the thoughts and behaviors associated with addiction.
Psychotherapy refers to a broad spectrum of treatment methods and exercises for treating alcohol and drug addiction. Laguna Shores incorporates these methods into its treatment to form a safe and trusting environment filled with upward momentum and motivation toward a healthier lifestyle.
Forms of Psychotherapy at Laguna Shores
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is one of the most popular and effective forms of treatment for those with substance abuse disorder. At Laguna Shores, our professionals utilize CBT to help clients apply logic and reason to their lives by evaluating how their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors influence each other. This form of therapy effectively treats co-occurring disorders such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, and substance use disorders.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy
Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) is a form of CBT that focuses on mindfulness and gaining control over patterns of behavior. This form of therapy is effective for individuals who have a difficult time reacting to emotions and acting on impulse. It helps with accepting change and responding to conflict and is helpful for those who have borderline personality disorder or experienced sexual trauma.

Existential Therapy
This form of therapy revolves around themes of freedom and responsibility in recovery. Many who suffer from addiction will experience feelings of loneliness and meaninglessness. The more we learn about taking responsibility for the decisions we make, the freer we feel.
We firmly believe that the skills learned in psychotherapy will improve your ability to enjoy life-long addiction recovery.
Experiential Therapy
We recognize the importance of having fun in recovery. With experiential therapy, our clients get opportunities to push boundaries and open horizons to new ways of life in recovery.
We offer a variety of field trips and unique experiences to keep clients busy and upbeat, such as:
- Museum field trips
- Float tanks
- Outdoor adventures
- Exploring downtown Los Angeles
- Professional sports games
- Aerial skills classes
- Ropes courses
- Ziplining
- Yoga
- Equine therapy
- Beach trips
By making sobriety enjoyable, you can take your experience home to integrate it into your life.
Tools for Recovery
Through life skills groups, our clients will learn practical techniques for stress-free living after treatment. These workshops teach vocational skills, housekeeping, nutrition, budgeting, and family communication, all of which are chosen by the individuals.
