Medication Assisted Treatment
Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) programs use FDA- approved medications to treat Substance Use Disorders. These medications treat opioid addiction and alcoholism by relieving the withdrawal symptoms and psychological cravings that result from chemical imbalances.
The goal of MAT is keeping the body and brain chemistry balanced, so that a person can focus on their recovery.
Traditional methods can help prevent relapse. But complementary Holistic therapies like yoga, mindfulness, and meditation can help as well. Yoga and mindfulness meditation target stress-related thoughts and emotions.
Yoga has been shown to increase the production of dopamine by up to 65%. This increase in dopamine can help lessen feelings of withdrawal and increase the likelihood of success in recovery.
Family therapy is an important part of substance abuse treatment. When one family member is ill with the disease of addiction, the whole family is ill as well. Since the family is a system of closely connected parts, when one part “breaks down,” it affects the entire system. That’s why it is key that therapy is given to help heal the family as well as to help the person struggling with addiction. There are different therapeutic approaches to family therapy.
